About the app.

Metaballs is a hands-on 3D creation tool built around soft, organic forms. You can grab shapes, move them together, and watch them fuse in real time, which makes sculpting feel closer to handling a physical material than editing points on a flat screen.

Materials and visionOS 26 manipulation gestures give you room to shape the result and explore it from every side. The controls make an unfamiliar kind of 3D modeling feel approachable, while a virtual potter’s wheel lets you rotate the scene without walking around the entire model.

The basic sculpting playground is free. A subscription or one-time lifetime unlock adds more shapes and materials plus USDZ export for other creative tools and STL export for 3D printing, giving a playful experiment a practical next step.

Gregory and Colleen Wieber entered app development with Polychord for iPad in 2010. The music-making app became one of the platform’s first top-ten music apps, and the pair formed Apposite. After Gregory spent the better part of a decade at Google, he returned to full-time independent development with Apple Vision Pro, drawn by the energy of the iPad’s early days and the platform’s close-knit developer community.

Why Gregory built Metaballs

The idea came to me at WWDC 2025, when Apple introduced its new manipulation gestures. I realized I could combine them with Metaballs experiments I had built years earlier using Metal compute shaders. I was also inspired by MacPaint. It did more than offer a creative tool. It introduced people to a new kind of computing. I wanted to make something that breaks out of the window, letting anyone playfully sculpt 3D shapes and materials without needing experience with a 3D app.

Top Pick reflection

Making apps always involves some faith that users will connect with what you have made, and it has been really cool to see people having fun with Metaballs. I’m super stoked to be featured on Spatial Insider. Justin’s videos have been a big part of the Vision Pro community from the beginning, and it has been really cool watching his channel grow. I’m excited to see how the new website continues that story.
