Primary works directly with experienced journalists and contributors around the world to present reporting captured on iPhone in spatial video. Its stories bring viewers close to protests, conflict zones, climate disasters, and the people living through events that can feel distant in a traditional news feed.
On Apple Vision Pro, the scale, proximity, and depth of each scene add useful context without turning the reporting into spectacle. A minimal interface stays out of the way, so attention remains on the place, the people, and what the journalist chose to document.
The current library is a strong beginning, especially for viewers curious about how spatial capture can change firsthand reporting. More frequent stories and a much larger archive could make Primary an essential news destination on Vision Pro.

Maura Axelrod and Sam Baumel cofounded Primary. Maura, a former Associated Press journalist, leads its editorial work. Apple named Primary the 2026 Apple Design Award winner for Social Impact, recognizing its experienced global contributors, minimal interface, and focus on consequential reporting without sensationalism or clickbait.
Why Primary was built
Primary grew from the idea that trust in journalism comes from being there. The team works directly with reporters on the ground and uses spatial video to preserve a stronger sense of scale, proximity, and presence while keeping the journalist's work at the center of every story.
