Insta360 X6 Will Turn 360 Recordings Into Gaussian Splats
The new Spatial Capture feature captures a place with the X6, then Insta360’s app turns the recording into an explorable 3D scene.

Insta360’s next camera will not be limited to replaying a moment. The company says the X6’s new Spatial Capture feature will use its app to preserve a place as a 3D scene.
Record a place in 360, bring the footage into Insta360’s app, and it becomes a Gaussian-splat model that is no longer locked to the camera’s original path.
A 22-second teaser shows someone carrying the X6 through an ornate room. When the capture ends, the viewpoint breaks away from the camera and moves around the reconstructed statue and its surroundings.
The breakthrough could be the workflow
Gaussian splatting is not new, and creators can already build splats from 360 footage. But the process usually requires separate software. I use that workflow with the Insta360 X5 (opens in a new tab). Moving the reconstruction into Insta360’s app could remove the most technical steps and make spatial capture useful to far more camera owners.
What August 12 needs to answer
The teaser leaves the practical details open. Insta360 has not said how much footage Spatial Capture needs, how long processing takes, whether it happens on a phone or in the cloud, or whether finished models can be exported. It also has not said whether older cameras will support the feature.
Those answers will determine whether Spatial Capture becomes an easy new way to preserve a place or remains a polished demo with narrow uses. Insta360 will reveal the X6 on August 12 at 6 a.m. Pacific.
