Snap will give its SPECS augmented reality glasses a deeper public showcase on September 16 at 4 p.m. Pacific.

The presentation should offer a clearer picture of how Snap sees glasses moving useful digital tools from phones and headsets into the world around the wearer.

Snap co-founder and CEO Evan Spiegel will lead the presentation, which the company describes on its official event page (opens in a new tab) as the launch of SPECS. Viewers can register to watch the livestream.

Snap unveiled SPECS at AWE in June (opens in a new tab) and opened preorders for $2,195 with a $200 refundable deposit. The company says the glasses are expected to begin shipping this fall in the United States, United Kingdom, and France, but it has not announced a specific date.

SPECS use transparent displays to place digital content within the wearer’s surroundings. Snap has shown them providing directions, translating text, measuring physical objects, creating large private screens, and offering contextual assistance based on what the wearer sees.

Those capabilities make SPECS one of the clearest previews yet of where consumer glasses may be headed. The two sizes weigh 132 or 136 grams (opens in a new tab), but they combine spatial displays, environmental understanding, and hands-free controls in eyewear intended for use beyond a headset.

Snap has not published a detailed agenda for the September event. Spatial Insider will share more as the company confirms what it plans to demonstrate and when SPECS will begin reaching buyers.
